A School District Turns Down $27 Million? You Gotta Be Kiddin’

Thursday, May 14, 2015

tip-hat-graphic-artWe give at least 6 tips of our hat to Scio Superintendent of Schools Gary Temple and his school board. Thanks to a quirk in Oregon school funding laws his 700 students were eligible for a $27 million jackpot.

But Supt. Temple and his board believed that “This is not responsible.”

We hope his students learn a big lesson in character from this outstanding leader. And we hope you’ll tip your hat to him as well.

tip-hat-graphic-artToday we tip our hat to Democratic Senator Alan Bates, who suggests that legislators should be “getting people away from depending on government to make a living and really become self-sufficient.” Well said, Alan!

tip-hat-graphic-artOregon Senator Dares to Cross Her Party

We tip our hat to Sen. Betsy Johnson (Dem., Scappoose), who has the courage to come out against her party’s orthodoxy and oppose the Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program.

It’s not easy to challenge your peers – especially in politics.

Please join us in applauding Betsy. And please click on this link to learn more about why Betsy took this position.

Over the years we’ve given “Guv Kitz” one heck of a pounding. But today we’re going to tip our hat to him because, according to The (Bend) Bulletin, he wants the state to consider lower taxes on capital gains.

We’re with Kitz on this one because we, too, want to incentivize Oregonians to take business and investment risks and we know that lowering the price of these risks will grow jobs.

Way to go, Guv!

tip-hat-graphic-artA Tip of our Hat To…State Democratic Representative Val Hoyle, who has recently spent considerable time listening to business owners’ concerns about the potential State law regulating sick leave pay.

We note that Rep. Hoyle is one of the very few Democrats listening to those who will be most affected by this legislation. Thanks, Val – Keep up the good work.

Public Utilities Commission (PUC) Recommends Against Some Conservation Programs

Tuesday, September 30, 2014

tip-hat-graphic-artOur hat’s off to Oregon’s PUC, which has figured out that some conservation programs no longer make sense. That’s because a glut of natural gas has drastically reduced its price.

The result? Some conservation programs involving the gas now only return two dollars of benefits for every five dollars spent.

We hope that other Oregon agencies take note of the PUC’s concern for taxpayers’ dollars. But we’re not betting on it.

This week we tip our hat to two deserving Oregon officials.

First, we tip to Springfield mayor Christine Lundberg, who organized a city-wide campaign to remove graffiti along a two and one half mile bike path. And we tip to Sherwin-Williams and BRNG recycling, which donated the paint and to the volunteers who cleaned and painted.

We also tip our hat to State Treasurer Ted Wheeler, who saved Oregon taxpayers over $30 million by lowering interest rates in two bond refunding transactions.

Recently a loyal Lane Solutions subscriber suggested that we inform readers of something good done by government. We promised that we would. And we’ve been looking…and looking.

Now we’re ready to tip our hat to JFK Airport’s Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) crew.

Recently one of us flew to JFK from Tel Aviv. Even at midnight we found the ICE team to be courteous and efficient. They whisked us and our luggage through in a very few minutes.

Great work, ICE. Now get the rest of the government to be just half as efficient with our tax money!
