OR Attorney General Calls Out Worst Charities
We tip our hat to Democratic Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, who’s posted the “2014 Oregon Attorney General Worst Charity List.” Some of these “charities” give virtually nothing to their stated causes.
Thanks, Ellen, for giving Oregonians a useful tool to use when deciding where to donate. Do what we do – print this list and consult it when a charity asks for your bucks. See the list here >>>
Tip of Our Hat – Issue 107
Today we tip our hat to Portland’s Oregonian, which tagged Initiative Petition 28 (IP28), the proposed new tax on “Big Business”, as exactly what it is – “IP28 is the work of a labor-backed special-interest group that has no obligation to consider other points of view…”
Tip of Our Hat – Issue 105
Today we tip our hat to State Representative Knute Buehler (R-Bend), who, during the next session, plans to introduce a bill giving public employees, board members and employees of nonprofits stronger whistleblower protections. We wish we’d had this a few years ago!
Tip of Our Hat – Issue 104
The Eugene Register Guard, whose editors alerted readers to how raising salaries of 215 non-union Lane County employees might lead to an upward spiral of many other salaries. In their words…
“Pay raises for some county managers may be justified. But increases should be evaluated on their own merits. The seductive logic of comparisons leads to salaries spiraling upward without end, leaving the people who ultimately pay them far behind.”
A Tip of Our Hat – Issue 103
Today we give a big tip of our hat to Seneca Jones Timber Company, which received two awards from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF).
Seneca’s first award was for protection of wetlands during timber harvests. Second was an award for cooperation with the ODF incident management team during the Cable Crossing Fire.
Join us in applauding this fine Eugene company!
Eugene RG Calls for Labor Laws to Adapt to “Gig Economy”
We tip our hat to the Eugene Register Guard, whose editors opined that the definition of employer-employee relationships must adapt to accommodate business models in the new “gig economy.”
Readers may recall that Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian issued an advisory opinion that drivers for Uber, which connects passengers with owners of private cars, are employees, not independent contractors, potentially killing an innovative business model.
We applaud RG editors for embracing a concept that is truly “progressive.” Read It Here >>>
Tip of Our Hat – Issue 100
Today we tip our hat 6 times to business friendly Oregon legislators – both Democrat & Republican, who fought to defeat over regulation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), pesticides & fertilizers.
Tip your hat, too, to these 6 men & women who put their votes on the line in support of Oregon natural resource businesses and job creation:
- Val Hoyle (D), Eugene/Junction City
- Mike McClane (R), Powell Butte
- Ted Ferrioli (R), John Day
- Brian Clem (D), Salem
- Brad Witt (D), Clatskanie
- Chris Edwards (D), Eugene
Thanks & keep up the good work!
Tip of Our Hat – Issue 94
This week we tip our hat to Democratic Oregon State Representative Mitch Greenlick, whose House Bill 2300 would allow health care practitioners to treat patients suffering from terminal diseases with “investigational” products not yet approved by the Federal Drug Administration.
Way to go, Mitch. Thanks for putting people before bureaucracies!
A Tip of Our Hat – Issue 93
Today we tip our hat twice (maybe more) to Portland Commissioner Steve Novick who, for the third consecutive time, turned down a cost of living increase. This one would have put about $10,000 into the Novick bank account.
Way to go, Steve!
Oregon Legislators Do the Right Thing
We give a big tip of our hat to Rep. Cedric R. Hayden and other Oregon legislators who passed House Bill 3139, which requires that cities allow nonprofit mobile medical and dental clinics to locate on private property for up to 6 months. See nearby article for details.
